This cozy Pan-Abode style cabin was originally built by the Forest Service in 1969. It sits on a rocky bluff overlooking the protected waters of Grindall Passage. Adjacent to the cabin is a protected cove with an unmaintained mooring buoy for marine access. Historically Grindall Island was used for fox farming before it became a recreation site.
The steep rocky shores of the island are rich with sea life making this a popular destination for divers. Because of the tidal action around the island, various marine debris are deposited here making beachcombing a sometimes-rewarding activity for park visitors. The Grindall Island area is known for its king salmon and halibut fishing. One of the main attractions is the sea lion haul out on the southwest side of the Island. The Grindall Island PUC is an essential destination for anyone wanting to experience the remote Southeast Alaska marine environment.
Park is located on an island and is accessed by float plane or boat only. Located on the west side of Clarence Strait south of the Kasaan Peninsula. Distance by boat from Knudson Cove in Ketchikan is 16 miles, 22 miles from Bar Harbor in Ketchikan and 25 miles from Hollis on Prince of Wales Island

There is no dock, visitors will need a small craft to get from their boat to the beach. There is an unmaintained mooring buoy at this site, use at own risk. No fresh water is available at the cabin and wood for heating is not provided. Bring appropriate clothing and come prepared for unpredictable changes in weather. Extra provisions are recommended as bad weather sometimes prevents safe navigation across Clarence Strait.
