Knik River Public Use Area
Management Plan
Adopted September, 2008
For more than a few years, residents near the Knik River and members of the public who recreate on public lands in the Knik River valley have voiced concern over the lack of direct management and law enforcement, and unlawful and dangerous activities occurring in the Knik Valley. Hearing those concerns as well as the concerns of others to continue their traditional recreational uses, legislation was passed designating the Knik River Valley and surrounding public lands as the Knik River Public Use Area (PUA) in 2006. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was directed through that legislation to develop a management plan for the PUA.
Since then, DNR developed the Knik River Public Use Area Management Plan, which was adopted in September, 2008, and that has formed the basis for the management of the state's land uses and resources within the PUA for the last two years. Also adopted were what is termed the 'Phase 1' regulations (11 AAC 96.016), which are intended to manage specific types of uses and activities within the PUA that were not directly related to the plan development process itself but are intended to deal with long-standing public concerns relating to this area. DNR intends to develop 'Phase 2' regulations; these will involve the management of uses and resources that the plan specifically recommended for implementation..
The PUA Management Plan follows. If desired, you can request a CD of the plan through the contact information provided below (RADS). Questions about the plan itself can be directed to Resource Assessment and Development Section in Anchorage. Questions about daily operational issues or Phase 1 and (eventually) Phase 2 regulations should be directed to the Southcentral Region.
